According to a New York Times report citing sources close to the White House, Amazon has allegedly submitted an offer to acquire TikTok. With the deadline for a sale looming—TikTok faces a nationwide ban in the U.S. unless a deal is reached by the end of April—the platform is said to be in talks with new potential buyers.
Although Amazon’s unexpected move is reportedly not being taken seriously by Washington policymakers, the offer was reportedly delivered in the form of a letter addressed directly to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Vice President JD Vance. This adds a new layer to the political dynamics surrounding the platform, which have been ongoing since Donald Trump’s administration began pushing for TikTok’s divestiture from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
TikTok’s links to China have long fueled national security concerns, particularly among right-wing lawmakers. Under Trump, the U.S. government delayed the enforcement of a law mandating TikTok’s sale and granted the company time to find a suitable American buyer. At one point, Trump even stated that the federal government would play an active role in the transaction.
So far, neither Amazon nor TikTok has made an official comment regarding the acquisition rumors. However, the clock is ticking. Without a last-minute breakthrough, TikTok could face a full ban across the United States.
