Apple Acquires Pixelmator: A New Era in Photo Editing Begins

Apple has announced the acquisition of Pixelmator, a photo-editing application offering powerful tools for MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS users. Founded in 2007 by Lithuanian brothers Saulius and Aidas Dailide, Pixelmator quickly became a more affordable alternative to Adobe Photoshop, providing a robust solution for image editing.

With tools for layer-based editing, filters, color correction, and retouching—as well as AI-powered features—Pixelmator has carved out a niche among individual users, amateur designers, and small businesses. Following regulatory approvals, the company will continue its operations under the Apple umbrella.

A Brand Inspired by Apple
Pixelmator, which offers a one-time purchase model through its Pixelmator Pro application, issued a blog post thanking its user base for their support over the years. The company noted that its design philosophy has long been inspired by Apple, with a focus on ease of use and high performance that has guided its journey.

The company reassured users that there would be no immediate changes to its popular applications—Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator, and Photomaker. In the announcement, Pixelmator expressed gratitude for its users, saying, “For the past 17 years, we’ve been supported by our incredible user base. Your feedback has played a huge role in shaping our applications into what they are today. As we step into this exciting new chapter, we’re eager to share what’s next.”

The collaboration between Apple and Pixelmator is being closely watched in the industry, with expectations high for a deeper integration of Pixelmator’s advanced features into the Apple ecosystem, creating a richer, more seamless experience for users.
