Apple to pay $95 million in Siri privacy lawsuit settlement

Apple has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for $95 million over allegations that its voice assistant, Siri, shared user data with third parties without consent.

The lawsuit, filed in 2019, claimed that Siri was inadvertently activated and recorded private or confidential conversations, which were then transmitted to Apple. The case was heard in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where Apple chose to pursue a settlement.

As part of the agreement, Apple will confirm that it has permanently deleted individual Siri recordings collected prior to October 2019. The company will also provide more detailed information about how users can participate in preferences aimed at improving Siri’s functionality.

If approved by the judge, Apple will have six months to meet its obligations under the settlement. Additionally, users who owned Siri-enabled devices such as iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, or iMacs between September 17, 2024, and December 31, 2024, will be eligible to receive up to $20 per device.
