Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Seeking Funding for Her New AI Startup

In September, former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati announced her departure from the company through a post on X. According to sources close to the matter, Murati is now seeking investment for her new AI startup. While the name of the venture has not yet been disclosed to the public, the startup aims to develop AI-powered products based on proprietary models. Sources indicate that the discussions are still in the early stages, but Murati could potentially raise over $100 million.

Murati, who led transformative projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E for over six years, is reportedly aiming to bring former OpenAI employees onto her team, including AI researcher Barreth Zoph, who left the company on the same day as her.

Known for shaping OpenAI’s technological direction, Murati temporarily stepped into the CEO role in November 2023 after the company’s board removed Sam Altman. Upon Altman’s return, Murati resumed her role as CTO and spearheaded the launch of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s voice-based AI assistant.

In her September X post, Murati explained that she was leaving OpenAI to focus on her own research and create more space for personal projects. As one of OpenAI’s most prominent figures, her departure marked a significant change, leaving Sam Altman as the sole remaining co-founder. Following her exit, Altman made structural changes to shift OpenAI away from its non-profit model.
